Should I Reface or Replace My Cabinets?

HGTV shows have been driving home the idea that a super easy, cheap kitchen remodel is an option for anyone with an existing kitchen. You’re then faced with the dilemma, do I reface or replace my cabinets? Most people think that simply repainting your existing cabinets is the cheapest way to go, and often that’s correct. However, depending on a few factors, new cabinets could be the better option for you after all things are considered. To figure out which option is right for you, you should ask a few key questions…

How old are your kitchen cabinets? Are the interiors falling apart? While slapping a fresh coat of paint on the outside of your cabinets will give them curb appeal. Are the drawers gliding in and out smoothly? Are the shelves straight? Or are they warped and sagging? Is the lining or finish holding up? Are you seeing exposed particle board? If any of these seem to be a problem, perhaps purchasing new cabinets might be a better option. Once you factor in the cost of fixing drawer guides, painting the exterior, fixing or replacing hinges.. A new set of cabinets could quote out to be just as cost effective.

Furthermore, are you looking to upgrade your cabinets? If you’re looking to add soft close doors and drawers for example… That can be a huge hassle to add to existing cabinets. Drawer boxes will likely need to be modified to fit a soft close drawer guide.

Ask yourself, do you like the layout of your kitchen? If you’ve always hated that one corner cabinet now could  be the time to change it with a new set of cabinets.

Will you be changing out your countertops? If you are then a new set of cabinets will most likely be the better option for you. If you are looking to keep your countertops then refacing is most likely your best option. Salvaging countertops is a tricky operation and will likely cost you more in labor.

Will you be changing your flooring? It’s usually handy to have your cabinets level with your flooring. If you’re changing out your flooring it might be worth it to invest in new cabinets. If you change your flooring, but not your cabinets you run the risk of having your dishwasher sitting in a slight hole. This could prove to be a real pain if you ever need to have your dishwasher serviced as it will be much harder to remove.
